The approach to discipline and control is underpinned by Adecyn Homes fundamental belief in the equal value and right of all our children and young people.
Behaviour Management
Young people have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, even when the need arises to be supported with regulating and controlling their emotions or receive a consequence for behaviours which they have chosen to partake in which have a negative result. This reinforces that everyone within Adecyn Homes has the right to feel safe at all times.
Each young person will have a comprehensive completed Behaviour Risk Plan in place, that is reviewed regularly, and this will demonstrate to all, how negative behaviour will be managed appropriately, thus hoping a reduction in such behaviours. The Behaviour Risk Plan runs in conjunction with an in-depth risk assessment which will demonstrate the potential for harm if such behaviours are not managed accordingly.
Consequences will be discussed with the young person, and they will be asked to make comments in relation to the consequence they have received. It is important to note that at Adecyn Homes, we are firm believers in praise and consequences for positive behaviours will outweigh consequences for negative behaviours. The theory behind this is that if a young person constantly receives praise and rewards for positive behaviour this would build their self-esteem and lead to a reduction of negative behaviour being shown.
Staff members will be trained using CPI Safety Intervention upon starting with Adecyn Homes and then are required to attend a full refresher course every 12 months, which involves the use of a two-person restrictive intervention techniques and non-restrictive breakaway techniques. Physical Intervention would only be used as a last resort where it is necessary to keep a child or young person safe from harm; harming another child or young person; staff member or causing extensive damage. All incidents involving restraint are fully recorded as required by the Children’s Homes Regulations, including quality standards 2015.
Once all the paper work is completed surrounding the incident, help and support is given to repair any relationships that may have been broken.
